"Where's the beef?"

DAVE MUNK • Special to the SunThe "Where's the Beef" dinner and concert on April 12 was a great success. The fundraiser included raffle ticket sales for prizes including 100, 50, or 25 pounds of beef, a cowhide, a quilt, and many other prizes. It is the main fundraiser of the year for the Lowry Music Boosters Club, and money raised is used for music scholarships, travel expenses, and additional instruments and equipment for the band and choirs at the high school. This photo features performers Kelton Robbins on trumpet, Khyra Cooley on trumpet and Samantha Yates on trumpet (behind Khyra's hand), Coleen Dunlap on tenor saxophone and Corina Ruiz on percussion.

Raffle prizes included gift certificates, wine, car cleaning items and restaurant certificates. The event attracted 53 cars and more than 200 people.

RENO - University of Nevada Cooperative Extension has partnered with the United States Department of Agriculture's Risk Management Agency to offer an Impact of Future Growth in Nevada Dairies workshop. The half-day workshop will be held in Lovelock on April 29 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Winter surveys point to good news for Nevada's big game hunters

RENO - Ken Gray, Eastern Region supervising biologist in Elko, reported his field biologists completed elk surveys and classified 10,384 elk this winter. This was a record elk survey for the region surpassing the 2010 sample by 1,005 elk.
