Haley draws fire from rivals in GOP presidential debate

Half of the four Republican presidential candidates on a debate stage in Alabama on Wednesday night focused their attacks on former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who’s vying for the prized second place in the nominating contest. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy teamed up early in the debate to repeatedly hit Haley on issues including transgender health care, support for Ukraine’s and Israel’s war efforts and her backing from corporate and wealthy donors.

Biden meets with leaders of tribal nations, signs order easing access to federal funds

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden signed an executive order Wednesday that would make it easier for tribal nations to access and invest federal funding on their own terms. “It’s hard work to heal the wrongs of the past and change the course and move forward,” Biden said. “But the actions we are taking today are key steps into that new era of tribal sovereignty and self-determination.”

USDA Rural Development announces funding for American Institute of Building Science

CARSON CITY — U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development State Director Lucas Ingvoldstad today announced that USDA is awarding $100,000 to American Institute of Building Science (AIOBS) through the Rural Energy for America Program Technical Assistance Grant (REAP TAG).

NV Energy donates $25,000 to Nevada Outdoor School

WINNEMUCCA — Nevada Outdoor School (NOS) received $25,000 from the NV Energy Foundation to support their Nature in My World school-based programs in Pershing, Humboldt, Lander, Elko, Eureka and White Pine Counties. This funding will help provide rural Nevada students with high quality outdoor learning experiences that increase their “Time Spent Outdoors” and strengthen their critical thinking, problem solving and observation skills.

Fallon distillery expanding by the barrel

Back in 2013 when Colby and Ashley Frey broke ground on a distillery to produce ultra-premium whiskey using grains grown on their 2,500-acre farm in Fallon, they made just 4,000 nine-liter cases of whiskey. Today, Frey Ranch produces more than 100,000 nine-liter cases of whiskey annually, which is about 1.2 million one-liter bottles of its signature bourbon, rye, and uncut farm-strength bourbon. A recent expansion of distillery operations, combined with brand expansions in multiple states, has the Frey’s raising a glass and toasting the good life.

NV wages among nation’s lowest, rate of wage growth among nation’s slowest

Not only are average hourly wages low in Nevada compared to other states, they are increasing at the nearly the slowest rate in the nation. That was one takeaway from a presentation given by Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation Chief Economist David Schmidt to the state’s Economic Forum on Tuesday. Nevada’s average hourly wage, as of October, was $29.34 — ranking 44th out of the 51 states and the District of Columbia.
