Winnemucca Health Fair

Representing Alzheimer’s Awareness and Age- and Dementia-Friendly Winnemucca for several years at the HGH Health Fair, I set up my table, load it with brochures and goodies, and meet and greet with many friends.

Getting ready the night before is preferable and cuts down on the morning race to park near the door so I can easily haul in my stuff, however, for some reason laziness engulfed me the Friday before and I put off the job until Saturday. Since I get up early and the doors open just after 6am for the 7am launch, no problem. No problem, that is until I decide to create one.

Up at 4:30 with my morning coffee, I elected to swim at 11, following the event, rather than jog at present. By 5, though, my mind had shifted and running became a necessity. With 90 minutes at the ready, I figured I could get out the door, get back and shower, throw boxes in my car, and be at the Convention Center by 6:30. Then 5 became 5:15 and time tightened. What could I cut out and still arrive on time. My hair! I’ll just clip it and that will serve me well. Fine, except, pulled-back hair does not present my best image, but too late to reflect on that. Then came thought #2…

This is it! My final Health Fair! The decision calmed my mind as I drug my items across the room and began to install things left and right. Whew! Thinking in a rather negative fashion had established a positive uplift, temporarily at least. As friends filed in, I remembered why I love this event.

Not only do I catch up with people I rarely see, I also have the opportunity to learn about all of the excellent offerings Winnemucca possesses plus I meet new friends.

From blood draws to preventing falls, to library “Stay Sharp” bags to emergency preparedness, my knowledge expands. The super Humboldt General Hospital totes mean that everyone has a handy space to store the multiple goodies provided at each station. Snacks and juices give attendees a boost as do the raffle cards garnered at each booth.

My topic, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, used to frighten people away – a forbidden subject best left hidden. Fortunately, times have changed. It seems everyone knows someone with cognitive decline or has lost a loved one to dementia.

People want to share their experiences or they want to know more about prevention of MCI (Mild Cognitive Impairment) and healthy living for body, soul, and brain. From birth until the end of life we count on our brains to help us function and survive. It is vital that we, in turn, recognize that our brain counts on us for exercise, nutrition, stimulating activities, social interaction, and protecting ourselves from unhealthy habits.

As the hours rolled on and fatigue increased I realized how much I enjoy this annual event. Reflecting on my quitting plans I accepted that I felt tired but I was also invigorated by this day. Organized, replete with interesting displays, a steady flow of friends and acquaintances, I packed my leftover items and deliberated on what to bring next year. A healthy day at the Health Fair rejuvenated me! Thanks Lions Club and HGH employees – you really produced a winner! Hundreds benefitted.

Speaking of cutting back, I really am trying. I had convinced myself that the Fair was out, but luckily my mind is malleable and open to change and back in I come. The next event I had considered Xing out is the annual Brain Health Summit. I love the presentations and learning opportunities, but I figured I could be replaced – chucked to the side as someone else stepped up.

As I started to wave my fond farewell in parting from the organizational group, my resignation fell on deaf ears. “Oh, no you don’t!” so I guess I won’t. That’s coming up May 14-15 and let me assure you that both days are packed with excellent speakers and delicious delights. While preparation is tiring, I know the Summit will be terrific – something for everyone.

Soon registration forms will be zooming (or Zooming) your way. If a lack of understanding exists in any corner of your mind as far as Brain Health goes, you will soon have every angle covered and answered. ADF-Winnemucca has united with Humboldt Connections – what better combination for improving the power of your brain?
