BMHS boys pick up wins at Pershing County, Coral Academy

The Northern 2A boys basketball standings are a tale of the top three teams separating themselves, while three more are fighting for the fourth, fifth and sixth spots for the upcoming regional championships in West Wendover.

Battle Mountain is part of that three-way tussle to get the No. 4 seed. 

The Longhorns helped themselves out this past weekend with a 60-49 win at Pershing County and 73-42 victory at Coral Academy on Saturday afternoon.

Battle Mountain improved to 8-5 in the Northern 2A and 13-9 overall. 

North Tahoe is fifth at 7-6, but owns a win over Battle Mountain and Pershing County sits in sixth at 7-7. The Longhorns swept the Mustangs this year.

West Wendover leads the Northern 2A at 12-1, followed by Incline (12-1) and Yerington (10-3). Yerington has the tiebreaker over Battle Mountain, with the season sweep this year.

Battle Mountain 60, Pershing County 49

Battle Mountain put a damper on the Winterfest festivities, but needed a big fourth quarter to get the win. 

The Longhorns jumped out to a 20-15 lead after eight minutes of play. However, the Mustangs came back in the second and third quarters to tie the game at 44. Battle Mountain pulled away in the fourth quarter with an 16-5 run to secure the win.

Freshman Geovanni Ruvalcaba led all scorers with 25 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. 

Lewis Strong added nine points and five rebounds and Blake Stuart, Adan Navarez and Zayne Hall each scored seven points. 

Nevarez grabbed 13 rebounds, Stuart had 10 boards and Hall contributed six rebounds, two blocks, one assists and one steal.

Luis Guizar netted three points and Chase Baum had two.


Battle Mountain 73, Coral Academy 42

Battle Mountain jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter and led 40-19 at halftime in the easy win over the Falcons.

Ruvalcaba was one of four Longhorn players in double figures with 10 points. 

Chase Lutz added 13 points, Baum 12 and Hall 10. Ruvalcaba picked up eight steals, three assists and three rebounds and Hall and Baum each had five rebounds.

Strong netted five points, Nevarez and Stuart four each, Isaac Martinez three and Eric Fernandez two.

Battle Mountain hosted West Wendover on Tuesday and results were not available at press time. 

The Longhorns make their final regular season road trip of the season with games at Silver Stage on Friday and Sierra Lutheran on Saturday.
