Jimenez, George place third at Vaquero Classic


The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team wrapped up the regular season this past weekend, with an 11th-place finish at the Vaquero Classic in Fernley. Spanish Springs won the meet with 340 points, followed by Fernley (274), Douglas (260) and Lowry (210.50).

Cruz Jimenez at 120 pounds and Ben George (285) each placed third for the Longhorns. Jimenez made his way to the championship semifinals, with pins against Carson’s Keona Basa Holokai, Sparks’ Gabriel Malagar and Spring Creek’s Trent Whitely.

Jimenez dropped a 5-3 decision to     eventual champion Justin Ruiz in the semifinals. Jimenez rallied back to beat Burns’ Henry Barnes 7-0 and Basa Holokai 9-8 for third place.

George won his first two matches by pin and then advanced to the semifinals, with a 4-1 win over Yerington’s Liam Foster. George dropped his semifinals match to Carson’s Dominic Porter but came back with first-period pins over Burn’s Eyon Mitchell and Lowry’s Logan Jonas.

Wyatt Madalena placed fourth at 150 pounds and Liam Bundrock placed fifth at 126 pounds. 

Madalena pinned his first two opponents, but lost in the quarterfinals to Burns’ Cannon Kemper.

Madalena made his way through the consolation bracket with three wins however, he lost the third-place bout to Douglas’ Kolton Zinn.

Bundrock won his first two matches by first-period pins, then dropped a quarterfinal match to Lowry’s Marcas Ricci 9-6.

Bundrock won two consolation matches by decision, but lost in the consolation semifinals to Reed’s Sheamus Ball. 

Bundrock avenged an earlier loss to Ricci, winning 9-3 in the fifth-place match.

Leo Mathias reached the consolation fourth round at 215 pounds and Anthony Lopez-Hernandez (138) and Andy Wall (160) reached the consolation third round.

Battle Mountain traveled to Wells for the first set of league duals on Wednesday and results were not available at press time.

 The Longhorns host league duals on Friday at noon. 

The Northern 3A Regional Championship takes place Saturday, Feb. 10, at Pershing County High School in Lovelock.
