Lowry’s Maddex Hislop chips on to the third green at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course during a Northern 3A tournament on April 15.

After nearly a month off since its first two tournaments at the end of March in Dayton and Fernley, the Lowry High School boys golf team and the Northern 3A got back on the course with tournaments in Winnemucca and Fallon last week.

The league stopped at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Monday, April 15, with Landon Esquivel taking advantage of his home course to win medalist honors with a round of 78.

He was the only player in the field to break 80.

The top six teams were separated by 12 strokes in an extremely close battle for the top spot. Churchill County won the tournament with 346, with Elko and Fernley tying for second at 349.

Lowry’s John Boyle hits his tee shot on the eighth hole.

Lowry placed fourth with a 350 and Truckee (355), South Tahoe (358) and North Valleys (384) were fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively.

Fernley’s Jacob Holmes (82) and Noah Davis (83) finished second and third on the individual side, with South Tahoe’s Johnny Womack and Churchill County’s Dierks Hammon each shot 84.

Maddex Hislop carded an 87 for the Buckaroos, with Landon Tangreen and Jack DeLong shooting 91 and 94, respectfully. John Boyle (103) and Jack Olson (105) rounded out the scores for Lowry.

Lowry finishes seventh in Fallon

The Northern 3A was right back on the course the following day (April 16) to play at Fallon. Churchill County won on its home course with a score of 326.

Elko (340), Fernley (343) and Truckee (345) were within five strokes with each other and South Tahoe was fifth at 365. Spring Creek (377) placed sixth and Lowry (381) was seventh.

Churchill County’s Pakela Malama-Gomes and Colin Shishido each shot 76 and Fernley’s Noah Davis carded an 80.

Lowry’s Jack DeLong looks on after hitting his drive on No. 8.

Hislop shot a career best 83 to pace the Buckaroos, with Esquivel shooting 87. They were the only two golfers to break 90 or 100.

Boyle carded a 101, Tangreen and DeLong each 110 and Olson finished with a 113.

The Northern 3A doesn’t have regional postseason tournament and the top three teams from the final regular season point standings advance to the state tournament.

Churchill County leads the Northern 3A with 40 points, followed by Fernley (33.5) and Elko (32.5). Truckee is fourth with 29 points and South Tahoe (22.5) and Lowry (19.5) are fifth and sixth, respectfully.

The Northern 3A moved to Spring Creek on April 22 and Elko on April 23, and results were not available at press time.

The regular season closes with trips to South Tahoe on May 5 and Reno and Sierra Sage Golf Course in Reno on May 7.

The NIAA State Championships will take place May 14-15 in Pahrump.
