Rosen: USPS stonewalling over proposed Reno-to-Sacramento move

The United States Postal Service could begin moving mail processing operations out of Reno in January, but postal service officials were otherwise unhelpful in providing more information to state officials in a recent briefing, Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) told reporters Thursday.

Under the proposal, which has drawn bipartisan opposition, Northern Nevada mail would first go to a Sacramento processing facility before reaching its destination. With implementation happening as soon as January, this year’s mail-in ballots would likely be unaffected.

Members of Nevada’s congressional delegation had requested information on any assessments USPS conducted on the potential impact on the region’s economy and elections.

“They avoided answering many questions directly, or providing any data at all,” Rosen said of the briefing.

An agency spokesperson said it has taken a “transparent, methodical approach” and appreciated the delegation’s involvement.

A committee that Rosen sits on will hold a postal service oversight hearing on Tuesday.
