Pershing County sweeps Oasis Academy stay undefeated and atop the Northern 2A

Last week, the Pershing County softball team successfully defended their perfect season against Oasis Academy. 

Midweek, Pershing County traveled to Fallon and beat Oasis 10-1. 

On Saturday, the Bighorns came to Pershing County. 

The Fallon school kept the scores close but lost 8-6 and  5-4 in nine innings) to the top team in the 2A, the Mustangs.

With the wins, Pershing County stands at 18-0, overall and 16-0 in the 2A.

Oasis Academy  (9-5) is a team to watch. They are third in the 2A behind Pershing County and Yerington (11-4).

Fallon fans showed up to Pershing County and their girls played hard. 

Pershing County’s Taylor Garland pitched a no-hitter in the series opener in Fallon. 

She struck out 18 and walked three over seven innings. Anna Happy went 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs, a triple and two RBIs. Aaliyah Allen went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Garland and Happy are seniors. 

Allen, a catcher, still has a year to go.

The Mustangs hosted Oasis on Saturday. Pershing County fans filled the bleachers on one of the first mild days of the year.

Some pushed lawn chairs against the fence for a better look at the competitive games.

Oasis stole multiple bases and scored six runs in the first game. But the Mustangs pulled together. They showed their skills at bat early on. Miya Gallagher, a senior, bunted, advanced the runner and made it to first base.

“Our girls showed grit by scoring two runs in the sixth inning to pull ahead,” said coach Jordan McKinney. “We held Oasis in the top of the seventh and came out on top.” 

Raegan Burrows, a junior, pitched the first five innings. Garland closed out the game.

After scoring all four of their runs in the second inning, Oasis lost an early lead in the series finale.

“We had to battle,” McKinney said. “We were down four. The girls showed real grit and did not want to lose.”

The Mustangs scored two runs in the fifth and two in the seventh to tie the game at four. It headed to extra innings.

In the ninth inning, Yasmine McKinney got a hit and made it past Oasis to third base. Mady Grenz’s hit scored McKinney and clinched the Mustang win.

Grenz went 2-for-4 and scored two of Pershing County’s runs. Garland pitched the nine innings. She struck out 17, walked one, and allowed three hits and four runs. 

Pershing County travels to Battle Mountain on Thursday, April 18. 

On Tuesday, April 30, they’ll travel to Silver Springs to start the last series of the regular season against the Nighthawks. Saturday, May 4, Pershing County hosts Silver Stage for senior day. 

Pershing County’s seniors are Taylor Garland, Anna Happy, Kaylah Hanley, Mady Grenz, Miya Gallagher and Yasmine McKinney.
