The Pershing County High School baseball scored its first league win of the season on Tuesday, April 2 in Lovelock. 

The Mustangs beat rival school Battle Mountain 15-6.

Plans to finish the series in Battle Mountain went awry due to a blast of wintry weather. 

The remaining two games were played in Battle Mountain on Monday, April 8.

Speaking of blasts, the Mustangs jumped out against the Longhorns with seven runs, shortly after Wiatt Kelley gave Battle Mountain a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first on the strength of a three-run home run. 

Nobody scored again until the top of the third inning, when Battle Mountain’s Colton Mills scored on a fielder’s choice.

Pershing County crossed home plate twice in the bottom of the fifth inning clinched the game for the home team. 

The Mustangs added six runs for a total to go in front 15-6.  

“We hope this a change in the tide for us,” coach Jared Jensen said. “Brian Flores, Diego Herrera and Tyler Miller had a good day against Battle Mountain. They stepped up in a good team win.”

Trenton Rhodes recorded the win for the Mustangs. He allowed six runs and six hits, struck out eight and walked one.

Mills started for Battle Mountain allowed six runs but none of those we earned. 

He gave up three hits. Liam Bundrock finished the final two innings.

Daniel Lara and Aiden Ruggles each had a pair of hits for Battle Mountain.  

The Mustangs also beat Battle Mountain during preseason (18-3).

Pershing County stands at 4-10 overall and 1-10 in the 2A. Battle Mountain dropped to 4-8 overall and 3-7 in the Northern 2A

Pershing County traveled to Oasis Academy (11-3) on Tuesday, April 9, for the first game of a tripleheader. 

Results were not available at press time. 

The Mustangs finish the series at home this Saturday at 10 a.m. and noon.

The Bighorns are third in the 2A behind West Wendover (11-1) and Incline (8-2) so the Mustangs aim to play at the top of their game.

Battle Mountain hits the road to play Sierra Lutheran on Friday at 7 p.m., and finish the series on Saturday with a doubleheader, beginning at 10 a.m.
