Humboldt County to host earthquake drill next month

On May 29, from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., Humboldt County Emergency Management will be conducting a functional earthquake drill at the Convention Center.

The purpose of this exercise is to test our County Emergency Operations Plan and our coordination with local, private, and state agencies.

This drill will include a simulated earthquake that will happen in the center of Winnemucca and will impact the hospital, the nursing home, courthouse, and two blocks of the businesses along Bridge Street.

There will not be any actual damage or disruption to any of these facilities.

All activities will be carried out inside the Convention Center West Hall.

People from these facilities and across the community will be invited to attend as participants, observers, and evaluators.

The exercise is being designed and conducted by Dr. Gayle Sherman and Mr. Ron Perciville.

The exercise will run during the morning and be followed immediately by an After-Action session discussing what went well, what could have been better, and how to improve.

This will be the first in a multi-year exercise plan being developed to increase the resiliency of Humboldt County and its citizens.
