Lowry boys golf team starts Northern 3A season at Dayton, Fernley

The Lowry High School boys team finally got is season going with a pair of tournaments early last week. 

The Buckaroos traveled to Dayton Valley Country Club on Monday, March 25, and Fernley on Tuesday, March 26.

In the season-opener at Dayton Valley, Churchill County claimed the top spot with a four-man score of 318. 

Fernley finished second at 340, followed by Elko (355), Truckee (356) and South Tahoe (370).

North Valleys placed sixth at 379 and Spring Creek (385) and Lowry (388) were seventh and eighth, respectfully.

Churchill County’s Dierks Hammon was the low medalist at 73 and Dayton’s Troy Kepler was second with a round of 74. Churchill County’s Colin Shishido (77) was third.

Landon Esquivel led the Buckaroos with a round of 85 and Maddex Hislop carded a 92. 

Jack DeLong shot 104 and John Boyle and Connor Neal shot rounds of 107. Jack Olsen finished with a 109.


Lowry ties for fifth at Fernley

Churchill County swept the team title for the week, beating Truckee (329-330) at Fernley. 

Fernley was third on its home course at 333, Elko was fourth at 345 and Lowry and South Tahoe tied for fifth with scores of 348. 

North Valleys and Spring Creek tied for seventh at 365.

Fernley’s Jacob Holmes was the low medalist on hos home course at 74 and Hammon and Kepler each shot 75. Churchill County’s Pakela Malama-Gomes was fourth at 76.

Esquivel and Hislop paced the Buckaroos with scores of 82 and 84. 

It was a career-best round for Hislop. Boyle improved by 17 strokes to finish with a 90 and DeLong had the last kept score at 92. 

Olsen shot a 100 for Lowry and Neal a 102.

The Northern 3A does not have a postseason tournament and the three state tournament advancers are based on total points at the end of the year. 

Churchill County leads the league with 20 points, followed by Fernley (17), Truckee (16), Elko (15), South Tahoe (11.5) and Lowry (8.5).

The Northern 3A schedule resumes on Monday, March 15, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course and Tuesday, April 16, in Fallon.
