Highlanders take three games from Longhorns

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team dropped a three-game series to Incline this past weekend in Battle Mountain.

The Highlanders won the opening game of the series 13-1 on Friday and the Lake Tahoe school swept a doubleheader on Saturday 20-7 and 16-7.

The Longhorns have lost six games in a row and are now 3-6 in the Northern 2A and 4-7 overall.

In the series opener on Friday, Incline did all its damage in the first three innings, scoring six runs in the first inning and five more in the second inning.

Battle Mountain collected its first hit of the game in the bottom of the second off a leadoff double by senior Wiatt Kelley.

He had two of the Longhorns’ three hits in the contest. Abel Martin walked later in the inning but both runners were left stranded.

Colton Mills and Kelley singled in the fourth inning for Battle Mountain’s only run.

He two teams combined for seven runs in the opening game on Saturday, Incline scored the first four, with Battle Mountain plating three runs in the bottom of the first. The Longhorns used a two-RBI single from Caden Fagg  to close the gap to 4-3. 

The Highlanders scored the next 16 runs, including eight in the third inning and four each in the fourth and fifth innings. Battle Mountain rallied in the fifth inning, scoring four runs but the comeback was not enough to end the game to the mercy rule.

In the series finale, Battle Mountain tied the game at 2-2 in the third innings, as Daniel Lara scored on a passed ball and Liam Bundrock plated a run on a wild pitch.

The Longhorns took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the third inning, as Matin scored on a sac fly from Angel Guadarrama. The Highlanders put the game out of reach with 10 runs in the sixth inning and five more in the seventh.

Lara and Mills each had two hits and Bundrock added one.

Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday to play Pershing County and results were not available at press time. The Longhorns host the Mustangs on Saturday in the final home games of the year. Battle Mountain finishes the season with nine road games.
