You know, I’m not sure I could recommend military service for young people now. Minimum enlistment for all branches is six years instead of three. That is too much.
While a young man is doing his patriotic duty, all his peers who stayed home have a six-year head start in their careers. In the Army there is a 3-year enlistment with 3 years National Guard.
Every time politicians need troops, instead of political suicide of returning the draft, they activate the National Guard, like a military piggy bank.
And NG service is no small thing now. Every drill weekend is a “MUTA 6”, all day Friday Saturday and Sunday. What employer is going to give you a three-day weekend once a month?
Military service to USA is a high honor but our leaders do not appreciate it.
