Free tax preparation starts next week

The Frontier Community Action Agency in Winnemucca is offering its annual free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) for moderate to low income families and individuals, beginning on January 24.

Through the program, qualifying residents can receive help understanding, completing and filing their taxes for free. IRS-trained staff can provide timely and accurate income tax preparation for moderate to low income families, with tax refund recipients receiving 100% of their state and federal income tax returns.

To have taxes done most efficiently, clients should bring valid identification, social security numbers or individual taxpayer identification cards for themselves, spouses and/or dependents, all W-2 and 1099 forms received daycare payment records, College Education Credit statements (1098-T), statements of property tax payments and mortgage payments, bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit.

The tax preparation service will continue through tax season. There are VITA centers across the region, including in Elko County.

Households with income below $58,000 per year may be eligible to have taxes done for free and qualify for tax credits, even if no taxes are owed.

The FCAA can answer questions and provide more information about the program at 775-623-9003.
