PCHS track and field back in action this weekend

The Pershing County High School track team has this week off but this Saturday, they’ll travel to Truckee High School for the Bob Shaffer Track Classic.

They’ll compete against athletes from almost 30 other schools. Each hopes to peak around the time of the zone and state championships.

Pershing County competes in several track and field events. Kylee Fuller has distance running covered. Fuller and Rylee Renfroe also run the 300 (Fuller) and 100 (Renfroe) hurdles.

Brayden Wagner started throwing the shot put in 2020 as a sophomore, averaging about 28 feet.

Now, as a senior, he consistently throws over 30 feet, with a PR of 33’3.’’He also throws the discus. In Battle Mountain, Wagner competed in the 100-meter run.

Yasmine Acosta and Eudosia Mendoza run the 100-meter race. Mendoza also runs the 200-meters along with Grace Kalsem. Fuller, Renfroe, Acosta and Mendoza have also teamed up for the 4x200 relay.

Daniel Jimenez and Efrain Gonzalez run the 200-meter race and compete in the long jump.

“Every week they are all becoming bigger, faster and stronger,” said Matt Fuller earlier in the season. It’s still true.  “They’re running faster, jumping further and throwing further. We are looking forward to the regionals.”

Hundreds of athletes want to make it to the first state competition in two years.

However, only the top four in each event will make the cut. It will be held in Sparks at Reed High School May 20-21.
