Battle Mountain girls golfers finish second at West Wendover/Wells

The Battle Mountain High School girls golf team is quickly headed to the end of its season and finished second in last two tournaments in preparation for the Northern 2A East Regional Tournament

The Lady Longhorns traveled to Wells on Thursday Sept. 23, to take on five other teams.

Battle Mountain finished in second place as a team with Jade Castellanos leading the team with a 126, taking fourth overall.

She was followed by Kiana Gonzales and Alyssa Laughon shooting a 135 each. Lisette Haney shot a 139 making up the team score of 535, three strokes behind West Wendover’ s first place finish.

This was the third week in a row that the Longhorns have come in second place as a team.

The previous week the Lady Longhorns traveled to West Wendover.

On that day, Haney led the way with a 139, finishing seventh overall on the tough 18-hole layout.

Kiana Gonzales shot a 156, Jade Castellanos a 158 and Venessa Gillogley carded a 169.

“The course was in pristine condition,” said BMHS coach Jayson Cutler. “The PGA Pro/Am had just played the course, which made it a very difficult course. The Longhorns have a very solid team this year. All the players continue to improve and each week it seems we have another player stepping up to challenge for the team score.

Battle Mountain travels to White Pine on Thursday, which will be the final regular season tournament.

The Northern 2A East Regional Championships will be held in Winnemucca on Thursday, Oct. 7.

The top three teams and the top six individuals from non-qualifying teams advance to the NIAA /One Nevada Class 2A Nevada State High School Girls Golf Championship.

“The girls should continue their improvement streak and challenge West Wendover for the East Region title,” Cutler said.
