Pershing County wrestlers off to good start

Reno’s Hug High School hosted a wrestling tournament this past Saturday. According to Pershing County High School coach Mike Brooks the Hug tournament is geared towards novice wrestlers. Assistant coach Buzz Brooks made the trip with Lucian Gonzalez, Wyatt Hughes and Brian Flores.

“Buzz was happy with their results. Some of them landed wins on their first career tournaments,” said Mike Brooks.

Meanwhile, Mike Brooks took Devin Moura to a more advanced tournament in Fallon. Moura finished 2-3 with two pins.

“It was nice to get back into it and see where we stand,” said the coach.

The PCHS wrestling roster includes three seniors – Mariano Gomez, Moura and Nick Flores. Gonzalez is a sophomore. Brian Flores, Justin Carruth and Hughes are freshman.

This Friday and Saturday, the wrestlers head to the Cody Louk Invitational in Winnemucca.

The Lowry wrestling team hosts the event at the Winnemucca Event Center. In past years upwards of 20 teams have competed.

On Saturday, McQueen High School hosts a tournament in Reno.

On Saturday, Dec. 18, it’s Lovelock’s turn to play host. The Lovelock Mustang Invitational starts at 9 a.m.

The AA Northern Regional Championships will also be held in Lovelock this year on Saturday, Feb. 12.
