Fourth of July events will remain at rec complex

For the second year in a row, the Fourth of July community festivities will be held at the Ralph Whitworth Recreation Complex. The Winnemucca Host Lions Club is organizing the Taste of Winnemucca Event from 12-6 p.m. and the City of Winnemucca will launch fireworks over the complex at dusk, confirmed by Winnemucca City Mayor Rich Stone.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and is the only water parade of the year.

Last year the Lion’s Club held the Taste of Winnemucca event from 2 p.m. until dark; based on feedback received from the public the event has been moved to 12-6 p.m. so there is less time between the conclusion of the parade and the community events.

“We’re finding that people weren’t very impressed with the transition from the parade to the other Fourth of July festivities with that big gap of time in the middle, so if we can make that a little more seamless we can make it better for everybody,” said Lion’s Club Secretary and Regional Zone Chair Ja’Lisa Leavell.

Leavell said they hope to have more vendors this year that cater to children, including the possibility (not confirmed) for pony rides hosted by Lazy P farm and a water bounce house over by the splash pad. At last year’s event, the splash pad was not yet functioning, this year it is expected to be in full force for the event.

The Boys & Girls Club facility will be closed on the Fourth of July.

Leavell said vendors are encouraged to bring pop-up shade structures and there will be a large awning provided by the Nevada Outdoor School for shade. The event will feature music, either provided by a local radio station or a live band with details not yet confirmed.

The Lion’s Club has been hosting the Fourth of July event in Winnemucca for over 85 years as a service to the community, and also as a fundraiser event for the various organizations supported by the Lions Club both in Winnemucca and throughout Nevada.
