Obituary: Dolores Mentaberry Jones

Dolores Mentaberry Jones was born on May 15, 1926, in Winnemucca, Nevada, to John and Damiena Mentaberry.

She died July 25, 2019, at Highland Village in Elko NV. in her sleep surrounded by her loving family.

Dolores grew up at the family ranch on McDermitt Creek in McDermitt Nevada with a large family.  Dolores attended grade school in Winnemucca and graduated from the Humboldt County High School in 1945.

She went to the University of Nevada Reno and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She attended UNR until her sweetheart Albert returned from WWII.  They were married and then had their beautiful daughter Jan and after that came their handsome son Davy.

Dolores stayed at home and took care of her two children Davy and Janice along with many nieces, nephews and grandchildren. They all have many memories of fun times in town at the "Big House".

She loved going to watch her grandkids at dances, football games, and rodeos.  She spent a lot of time in the stands cheering them on.  She and Albert enjoyed traveling around the world with Albert's sister Maxine and husband Ross Alger.

There was always work to be done along with feeding and taking care of many prize horses while her husband was away at work.  One time she had to cross the Humboldt river to some horses on the other side.

This was a daunting task because she did not know how to swim, and the river had flooded and the only way across was a narrow rail on the bridge which she shimmied across.  She and Albert raised many successful horses on the track, in the cutting pen and in the rodeo arena.  Dolores loved grooming them and getting them ready to shine, while Albert trained.

She loved spending time with her family and was always very proud to be a Mentaberry.  She loved meeting up with her sorority sisters the Magnificent Seven.

Dolores is survived by her daughter, Jan (Mike) Kalafatic of Lamoille; five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren:  Chad (Elizabeth) Alexander and his son Amos,  Bill (Kim) Alexander and their children Cody and Jess, Kim Alexander Young (Reed) and their children Race and Hunter, Casey (Olivya) Jones and their children Hadleigh, Avery, and David,  Alicia (Jason) Manard and their daughter Georgia Kay.

She is also survived by two brothers Edddie Mentaberry and David Mentaberry and numerous nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son David, and sisters Mary and Ann and brothers John, Fausto,  Henry and George.

The family would like to thank all of the nurses at Highland Village in Elko for their loving care and giving us one more year with our Mom, Grandma, and Tia.  You all are true angels!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Senior Citizens of Humboldt County (Pleasant Senior Center).
