Nelson named to Outland Trophy watch list

RENO —Nevada football senior Jake Nelson has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2019 Outland Trophy presented by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, the Football Writers Association of America announced today.

This is the first preseason watch list honor of Nelson’s career. Earlier this morning he was also named to the preseason All-Mountain West team for the first time.

Nelson joins just three others from around the Mountain West on the Outland Trophy watch list, which is presented annually to the nation’s top interior lineman.

Nelson was an honorable mention All-Mountain West selection a year ago.

He's started all 25 games in which he’s played in his career and last year led the Wolf Pack to a ranking of 14th nationally in pass protection as the Union allowed just 1.17 sacks per game.

The recipient of the 74th Outland Trophy will be announced during ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12, live from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

The official presentation to the winner will be made at the NFID Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee on Jan. 15, 2020.

Up to eight semifinalists will be named on Nov. 20 in Omaha and three finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 25.
