Hitters never forget their first one. Horns honk, and athletes slap each other on the back. Baserunners dash to light up the scoreboard. It’s a home run.

On Friday, July 19, the Lovelock Softball Association brought the excitement to McDougal Park. They threw a home run derby to benefit the McIntee family.

Amanda Holland (PCHS Class of 2009) organized the contest.

The rules were few.  Competitors supplied their own bats and pitchers. Each player had three minutes to knock as many out of the park as they could.

Nine women and 28 men competed. Sydney Jensen (Class of 2018) led the women with 13 home runs. On the men’s side, Christopher Quintana (Class of 2009) scored 15.

During his high school years, Quintana played baseball, basketball and football. Jensen excels at softball, volleyball and basketball.

Some players bounced between the home run derby and the horseshoe tournament. But with Connie Gottschalk announcing, it all went off without a hitch.

On Monday, July 22, the LSA played the last games of the regular season. Results were not available at press time. But you can still catch some softball if you hurry.

On Wednesday, July 24, the league will host three makeup games. Brew Crew faces the Weekend Warriors at 7 p.m. on field two. Meanwhile, the Swamp Donkeys and Sandlot Junkies square off on field one. At 8 p.m. the Swamp Donkeys play Modelo Time on field one.

On July 26 the LSA hosts its championship tournament. The single-elimination games start at 6 p.m.

“Thanks everyone for the love and support to make the 2019 season fun and successful,” says Jared Jensen, the LSA president.
