Thirty-one junior golfers hit the links last Wednesday at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on another beautiful Humboldt County morning to work on their strokes in the Herzog Family Tournament.
Four different age groups of boys and girls from 10 and under/13-17 went at it on the links, with many volunteers helping the kids out along the way.
Bailey Hayes won the girls 15-17 division with an 18 hole round of 102, while Caden Rorex took the boys title with an 85 over Max Mavity (87).
In the girls 13-14 Piper Nichols (70) was first over Hayden Case (83), and Landon Esquivel (61) edged out Trenton Mullis (63) in nine holes.
"This is my second year golfing. Golf is peaceful; it is like your own sport," Nichols said. "You don’t have to worry about your team, it is just on you. It is really relaxing too, just to come out on the range. I like driving and seeing how far I can hit it.”
Caden Montero shot an (80) in his initial trip around the course. “This is my first time playing an actual round,” Montero said. “I have been on the driving range and the putting green though. I like golf because you don’t have to take it too seriously if you don’t want to. I like driving the best; there is just something about hitting a ball as hard as you can with a stick.”
Katie Cassinelli (54) was the winner of the girls 11-12 and Luke Fentress (73) took the boys.
The girls 10 and under was won by Finn Christean (68), and Maddux Nichols (49) was the boys champion.
Junior golf continues every Wednesday throughout the summer and any questions should be directed to the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course at 623-9920.
