Obituary: Anna Bell Smith Alexander

Anna Bell Smith Alexander passed away June 21, 2019 surrounded by her family. Anna Bell was born in Glenwood, Arkansas, the middle of six children. in 1945, her parents sent her on the train, along with her youngest brother, Lloyd, to live in Toulon, Nevada with their older sister, Edna, who was employed by the railroad as a telegrapher.

Anna Bell attended Pershing County High School where she graduated in 1948. 

After high school Anna Bell moved to Winnemucca and went to work at the Eagle Drug Store where she met the love of her life, Jay W. Alexander. They were married in 1950 and had four children - Carl Alexander, Karen Forgnone, Kathy Lemich and Tom Alexander. She was blessed with five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. 

When her children were older, Anna Bell started her career with Nevada Bell as a telephone operator in Winnemucca. She then transferred to the Nevada Bell telephone repair office in Reno when the Winnemucca office was closed, retiring after 25 years of service. 

Anna Bell loved to travel and enjoyed many trips with her friends from the Pleasant Center in Winnemucca where she volunteered for many years. She received an award from the governor for a record number of volunteer service hours at the senior center in Winnemucca. 

Anna Bell was preceded in death by her husband Jay, grandson Corey, daughter-in-law Bonnie, her parents Ed and Lelia Smith, her sisters Edna and Mary Dell, and her brothers Andy, Ford and Lloyd. 

A private family graveside service is planned for July 19th and a memorial celebration of life is scheduled for August. 

The family would like to thank the HGH ambulance crew, the WPD officers who responded to the ambulance call, the ER staff, Doctor Odom, nurses Shannon, Jasmine, Justin, Tony, Ashley, Adrianna and any and all others that provided such professional and caring treatment for our mother in her final hours. 

In lieu of flowers or food, the family is requesting that donations be made in Anna Bell’s name to the Pleasant Senior Center, 1780 Lay Street, Winnemucca, NV 89445.
