McDermitt boys split opening games in Eastern 1A action

It was a mixed bag of results for the McDermitt High School boys basketball team, who opened up Eastern 1A play last week in McDermitt.

The weekend started off on a high note with a 76-41 victory over Wells on Friday, Jan. 5. The Bulldogs suffered a setback the following day with a 60-47 loss to Jackpot and sit at 1-1 in league play.

The senior duo of Diego Navarro and Cauy Crutcher combined for 57 points in the win over Wells. Navarro netted 32 points on the night at Crutcher added 25. Navarro also had nine rebounds, five steals and two assists. Crutcher had a team-high eight assists.

McDermitt put the game away early with the first 20 points of the game, holding Wells scoreless in the first quarter. The Bulldogs cruised from there, holding the double-digit lead throughout the night. McDermitt lead 37-18 at halftime and increased the advantage by a point in the fourth quarter.

McDermitt had one big run left in them and outscored Wells 22-7 in the final eight minutes to account for the 35-point win.

Duane Masters added eight points, nine rebounds, five steals and two assists. Duane Horse scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds and Bruno Rincon had five points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.

McDermitt falls to Jackpot

Despite holding a one-point lead after eight minutes of play, McDermitt dropped a league contest to Jackpot. The Bulldogs led 11-10 after the first quarter, only to see the Jaguars go on a 19-11 run in the second quarter and did not trail again.

Jackpot slowly grew its lead in the second half and held McDermitt off in the end. The Jaguars outscored the Bulldogs by six points in the final 16 minutes of play.

Crutcher paced McDermitt with 18 points, while Ben Draunidalo added 15 points. Navarro and Horse each scored seven points. Navarro and Draunidalo grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

McDermitt traveled to Carlin on Friday night and results were not available at press time. The Bulldogs play in Owyhee on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
