After spending some time getting healthy, the Longhorn wrestling team resumed their season with a two-day trip to Idaho.
“This is a great weekend for us,” said coach Mitch Domagala. “We had the opportunity to wrestle in two tough tournaments and experienced a lot of success.”
Leading the way for the green team at the 44th annual Buhl Invitational was Cameron Thompson with a second place finish. He was joined on the podium by Tristin Cordingley, who placed fourth.
“We wrestled well here,” he said. “This is a tough tournament and we more than held our own.”
DeAndre Powell, Jake Legarza, Bobby Kester and Fabian Castaneda also wrestled, but fell just short of placing.
The rest of the Longhorn squad took part in the Canyon Ridge Tournament in Twin Falls.
“The kids wrestled hard all weekend,” said coach Torrey Vezina. “They came off the Christmas break and picked up where they left off in December.”
The final team standings saw the Longhorns in fourth place out of 29 teams.
Bringing home the hardware was Jose Guizar and Daegan McClary with gold medal finishes; Kris Hall finished as runner-up, and Declan McClary, Jordan Gonzalez and Lyle Whitten captured fourth place medals. Also wrestling were Kohl Bellm and Tyler Rochester.
The Longhorn wrestlers will be in action again next weekend as they travel to Spring Creek for the Kiwanis Invitational.
