At the city council meeting on April 17, Mayor Di An Putnam proclaimed April 27, 2018 as “Arbor Day.” Arbor day is celebrated throughout the nation and the world, and the last Friday in April is established as Arbor Day in the State of Nevada (NRS 236.018).
“Nevadans and schools are encouraged to support Arbor Day by planting trees and shrubs, as a way of slowing global warming,” said Putnam. “Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, lower our heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperatures, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide habitat for wildlife.”
In honor of Arbor Day, the City of Winnemucca will be planting a commemorative tree in the Community Garden during the kickoff of the Color the Mucc event on April 28 at 9:30 a.m.
