HGH re-accredited for diabetes education

WINNEMUCCA — Humboldt General Hospital’s Dietary and Nutrition Services Department recently received some good news.

Last month, the department’s “Living Well with Diabetes” education program was re-accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).

The designation allows residents in and around Humboldt County to continue to access critical diabetes education services.

According to HGH Dietary and Nutrition Services Director Tiffani Nalivka, diabetes education is a collaborative process in which people with diabetes and their guest can gain knowledge and skills they can use to modify their lifestyle and behaviors for maximum health.

“We’re thrilled to receive this designation once again, so we can continue to educate our patients how to successfully self-manage diabetes and its related conditions,” said Nalivka.

“Living Well with Diabetes” is 10- to 13-hour comprehensive education program is delivered to diabetes patients on a one-and-one and small-group basis.

The program is covered by most insurances; for those who don’t have insurance, the hospital may be able to provide financial assistance.

Each year since the hospital’s original accreditation, the program offers eight to 10 sessions to meet the scheduling needs of local patients with diabetes. Educational topics include disease risks, monitoring blood sugar, creating meal plans, remaining active, managing medications and more.

“Living with a chronic condition can be very challenging,” said Nalivka, “so our goal is to help people create a self-management plan that will help them truly live well.”

Humboldt General Hospital re-accredits as a diabetes education program every four years, and submits a status report each year in between.

The hospital is now accepting patients for its remaining class sessions in 2017, including October 17 and 24, and November 30 and December 7.

Patients will need a referral from a medical provider to take part. For more information or to reserve a spot, please contact Nalivka at (775) 623-5222, ext. 1756 or via email at nalivkat@hghospital.org.
