Lowry, McDermitt volleyball teams start postseason run this weekend

The McDermitt and Lowry high school volleyball teams will be headed west this weekend for the Northern 1A and 3A Regional Championships.

After beginning the year not knowing if they would field a full team, McDermitt enters the regional championships at Wooster High School in Reno as the No. 3 seed from the Eastern 1A. The Lady Bulldogs, who missed out on the playoffs in 2016, finished 5-5 this season.

McDermitt will play Sierra Lutheran at 4:40 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The Falcons (16-2) finished in a tie for first in the Western 1A, but placed second after tiebreakers were calculated.

 Owyhee, the Eastern 1A champions, will face Smith Valley at 8 p.m. on Friday. The winners of those two matches meet at 11:45 a.m. on Saturday morning.

In the top half of the bracket, Coleville (Calif.) and Wells play at 6:20 p.m. on Friday and Eureka and Virginia City start the day at 3 p.m. Those quarterfinal winners will play at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The Northern 1A title match will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Wooster High School.

The two finalists advance to the NIAA 1A State Championships at Faith Lutheran High School in Las Vegas on Nov. 10-11.

It is an NIAA event and admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $3 for seniors 65 and over.

Lowry volleyball

The Lowry High School volleyball team will be in Fallon this weekend for the Northern 3A Regional Championships. 

However, the seedings are still unknown as of press time. Truckee and South Tahoe finished the regular season on Monday evening.

Truckee, Fernley and Lowry will be the top three seeds, with final positions decided on the outcome of the South Tahoe and Truckee match.

If the Lady Bucks are the No. 3 seed, they will play at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Churchill County High School. If Lowry is the No. 2 seed, it will get a bye into the next round and play the winner of the No. 3-6 match at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 4-5 match will be played at 5 p.m. on Friday. That match will include some combination of South Tahoe, Elko and Dayton. The winner of that match will play the No. 1 seed at noon on Saturday.

The championship match is slated to start at 4:30 p.m.

Lowry cross country

The Lowry High School cross country team will be in Sparks Saturday for the NIAA 3A State Championships at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex next to Reed High School.

The Buckaroos boys just missed out qualifying as a team but will send three individuals to the state meet. Will Kracaw, Robert Rangel and Hunter Albisu qualified as individuals. The 3A boys race will start at 10:30 a.m.

Becca Kuskie finished second at the Northern 3A Regional Championships this past Friday. She qualified for her third consecutive state meet and will run at 12:40 p.m.

Northern 3A soccer

Winnemucca will play host to the Northern 3A Regional Soccer Championships, beginning on Thursday. 

The action on the first day will take place at Lowry and the Boys and Girls Club of Winnemucca.

The four first-round girls matches will start at 1 p.m. Truckee and Dayton and North Tahoe and Incline are featured in the top portion of the bracket. The winners of those two matches play at 1 p.m. on Friday.

White Pine and Spring Creek and South Tahoe and Whittell make up the bottom half of the bracket. Those winners play at 1 p.m. on Friday as well.

The girls championship is set for 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The four first-round boys matches will start at 3 p.m. on Thursday. North Tahoe and Dayton and Sparks Tahoe and Elko comprise the top portion of the bracket. The winners of those two matches play at 3 p.m. on Friday.

Fernley and South Tahoe and Truckee and Yerington make up the bottom half of the bracket. Those winners play at 3 p.m. on Friday as well.

Northern 3A football

The Northern 3A football playoff start on Friday in Fallon. Churchill County will host Sparks at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will travel to Spring Creek on Saturday, Nov. 11, to play the second-seeded Spartans

In the other first round game, Truckee will host South Tahoe on Saturday at 1 p.m. 

That winner will travel to Fernley to play the Vaqueros at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11.
