Four Lowry cross county runners head to state championships

The Lowry High School cross country team will be well represented at the NIAA 3A State Championships this Saturday at Reed High School in Sparks.

Junior Becca Kuskie finished second in the Northern 3A Regional Championship last Friday on the Shadow Mountain Park course in Sparks.

She had a time of 20 minutes, 31 seconds to place in the runner-up spot. South Tahoe sophomore Carissa Buchholtz won the race with a time of 20:12. 

Spring Creek’s Rylie Lusk placed third at 20:41 and Truckee’s Isabella Terrazas (20:44) and Carly Davis (21:05) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Lowry’s Makayla Leveille finished 29th with a time of 23:57. She was the only other Lowry girl to run in the 3.1-mile race.

Spring Creek won the team title with 33 points, doubling up Elko, who was second with 66 points. Truckee finished third with 68 points and South Tahoe (92) and Fernley (107) rounded out the top five.

SECTA won the Southern 3A championship and was followed by Desert Pines and Pahrump Valley. The individual champion was Jazmon Felix of Desert Pines at 20:41.

The Lowry boys had one of its best team finishes in recent memory, but placed one spot out of qualifying for state as a team. The Buckaroos were fourth with 89 points.

Spring Creek won the team title with 41 points and was followed by Truckee (68) and Elko (73). The top three teams advance to the state meet. South Tahoe (125), Fernley (129), Churchill County (187) and Sparks (247) rounded out the team scores.

However, three of the Buckaroo boys qualified for the state championships as individuals.

Junior Will Kracaw finished fourth with a time of 17:40, just seven seconds out of second place. Freshman Robert Rangel crossed the finish line in 10th at 18:24 and senior Hunter Albisu placed 13th in a time of 18:28. 

Spring Creek’s Wlliam Fallini-Haas was the only runner under 17 minutes and won the race with a time of 16:50. Truckee’s Montana Montgomery placed second at 17:33 and Spring Creek’s Spencer Thomas was third with a time of 17:36. Truckee’s Cain Laine was fifth at 17:41.

Christian Olson finished 21st for the Buckaroos with a time of 18:51, while freshman Christopher McGuire was 44th at 21:07. Bryan Day (21:39) finished 48th and Josh Leveille was 51st with a time of 22:07.

Pahrump Valley won the team title in the Southern 3A with 39 points. Moapa Valley (60) and Cheyenne (72) were second and third, respectively. Pahrump Valley’s Bryce Odegard was the individual champion with a time of 17:36. 

The NIAA 3A State Championships are back at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks on Saturday. The 3A boys at 10:30 a.m. and the girls run at 12:40 p.m. The course finishes at Reed High School.
