Dates set for Humboldt County water plan public hearings

Public hearings for Humboldt County’s water plan will take place at 5:30 pm on the following days:

Oct. 24 - Paradise Valley at Community Hall

Oct. 25 – Winnemucca in Commissioners meeting room

Oct. 26 – Orovada Community Hall

During the hearing, the public will learn about the county’s water plan, why the county created it and what the county hopes to accomplish with it. Opportunity for public comment will follow.

The county will compile and consider public comment when making the final updates to the plan prior to its approval at the Nov. 20 Board of Commissioners meeting.

According to County Manager Dave Mendiola, after final approval, the water plan will be included in the county’s master plan, along with ordinances that will give the plan “teeth.”

With adoption of the water plan, the county hopes to waylay attempts to divert water from Humboldt County to facilities in other counties.

Though the State Water Engineer has the final say on water rights, Mendiola hopes the state will support the county’s water plan once established.
