Lowry boys get back on winning track with win over Churchill County

The Lowry High School boys soccer team overcame a slow start on Wednesday afternoon to beat Churchill County 7-1.

The Buckaroos held a slim 2-1 advantage at halftime, but scored five goals in the final 40 minutes and four goals in the final 18 minutes to stop a six-match losing streak.

Lowry now sits at 3-8-1 in the top division of the Northern 3A.

Lowry is still in playoff contention, but would need to win a majority of its final four matches and have teams above them lose.

The Buckaroos grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when Diego Gudino headed a ball in the back of the net. He received a pass from Oscar Galarza and finished the play.

Churchill County answered back minutes later on a shot by Matthew Fagundes that got over the head of Lowry goalie Chris Schultz.

Antonio Gallarzo-Herrera provided the eventual game-winning goal in the 30th minute when he scored from about 15 yards out. The Buckaroos had other chances to add to the advantage in the first half, but could not find the back of the net.

It took Lowry just five minutes to add to its lead in the second half, with Adrian Mendoza scoring the first of his two goals. He was assisted by Anthony Cuevas. It was Cuevas' turn to score in the 62nd minute when he took a pass from Austin Lloyd and converted the shot to make the score 4-1.

Seven minutes later, Mendoza collected his second goal of the day with an assist by Gudino. Thirty seconds later, Gudino broke free after the restart and scored in an empty net to increase the margin to 6-1.

The Buckaroos closed out the scoring with a goal by Galarza, who scored off a corner kick.

Lowry is currently in seventh place in the Northern 3A standings with 10 points.

North Tahoe (10-0-0), Sparks (8-1-1) and Truckee (8-2-0) are the top three teams in the league.

Spring Creek is fourth with 14 points at 4-5-2 and Elko is fifth with 12 points at 4-6-0. South Tahoe sits in sixth place with 11 points at 3-4-2.

Lowry travels to South Tahoe on Saturday for a noon start. The Buckaroos are back home on Wednesday to play Elko at 4 p.m.
