A steel sculpture was installed at the south end of Lovelock last week in time for Saturday’s dedication and the city’s centennial celebrations. Designed by Lovelock artist Don Bridges, the two-dimensional steel wagon and oxen are a memorial to the hundreds of emigrants who crossed the Forty Mile Desert.

A steel “1849 California Trail” signs marks the sculpture that’s visible from the I-80 freeway. Historic information on the California Trail and the Forty Mile Desert will be available when new interpretive panels are installed by the Bureau of Land Management outside the Marzen House Museum.
