Lowry drama and stagecrafts students gear up for Christmas skits

Lowry High School Drama and Stagecrafts students are gearing up for their annual Christmas show. But there’s a catch.

The Nevada Arts Council will use the Lowry High School auditorium for the Nutcracker on Dec. 9 and 10, so the Lowry students couldn’t use sets for their Dec. 13 performance. But necessity is the mother of invention, a wise person once said, so the students adapted.

The students built the show around skits based on the comedy show Saturday Night Live (SNL). Popular Christmas-themed SNL skits take center stage, with some twists and modifications.

The students didn’t mimic the SNL actors entirely, but they did include some of the behaviors and lines that made characters famous. The skits include some of the more well-known characters, like the Blues Brothers and Roseanna Roseannadanna, as well as some of the recent political satires.

Emmanuel Guillon Martinez wrote his own SNL-inspired skit, entitled “Victorcito.”

Between skits, students will sing and dance to Christmas and winter-themed songs like “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

On Tuesday, the students were still learning lines and the shape of the show remained somewhat fluid. At the end of the afternoon’s rehearsal, teacher Corinna James and the students discussed which music to use between skits, which led to a new skit idea.

Actors for some of the skits will depend on the night of the performance. Certain roles will switch out, giving more students time in the spotlight.

The Wednesday performance includes special guests from the life-skills classes.

The Christmas program runs Dec. 13 and 14 at 7 p.m. in Lowry High School auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students and children.

Attendees are asked to donate a nonperishable food item for holiday food baskets.
