Law enforcement “Joining Forces” for seatbelt compliance

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that 14,000 people’s lives in America were saved during 2015, because they wore their seat belts. The number of compliance checks and other information indicates that more people are protecting their own and their children’s lives by buckling up.

NHTSA says seat belt use in 2016 reached 90.1 percent, up from 88.5 percent in 2015, which they called a “statistically significant increase.” The goal is to continue to ensure everyone makes the commitment to use seat belts and proper child safety restraints every single time they are in a vehicle.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office will be “Joining Forces” with the Winnemucca Police Department and Nevada Highway Patrol. They will be looking to make sure drivers and passengers in vehicles are wearing their seat belts and that all children are protected with properly-installed child safety seats or booster seats.

Drivers are likely to encounter more deputies, officers and troopers on the roads, now through December 2. These members of law enforcement will be stopping drivers for different traffic offenses, including failure to wear seat belts, throughout northern Nevada

Funding for the extra patrols is coming from a “Joining Forces” grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety. “Joining Forces” is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program aimed at reducing injuries and crashes through statewide enforcement in the areas of DUI, speeding, distracted driving, seat belt use and pedestrian safety. The goal of these enforcement campaigns is to save lives by increasing public awareness of the danger of making poor choices while driving.
