School district construction update

Mike Mitchell, project manager for Humboldt County School District (HCSD), provided a construction status update during the Oct. 24 school board meeting. He and Superintendent Dave Jensen also proposed five projects for the summer of 2018, which the board approved.

Summer 2018 construction projects include:

• laying concrete in the upper and lower sidewalks at Winnemucca Grammar School

• resurfacing the kindergarten play area at Sonoma Heights Elementary School

• exterior insulation finishing for French Ford Middle School

• a heating unit and ductwork replacement for Lowry High School

• an evaporative cooling system for Winnemucca Junior High

The 10 rooftop HVAC units for French Ford Middle School will be installed over Christmas break. Crews will begin preparing for the installation mid-November and all work should be finished by January 5, Mitchell said.

A portable for King’s River school is ready for installation of electrical services and hookup to water. Big G will install a new handicapped access ramp.

Jensen said he was still waiting for information about replacing the portable at Sonoma Heights that housed the school’s computer lab. The portable caught fire in September. Firefighters rescued most of the computers before putting out the blaze. Jensen said five to seven of the computer lab’s 50 computers were lost.

Mitchell said he will finish the projects currently underway before venturing into retirement.

The board also welcomed the district’s new project manager, John Burhans from JR Builders.
