Lady Bulldogs win three games on the Comstock

If this past weekend was any indication, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team should be in good shape later in the season after beating three teams from the Western 1A at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.

The Lady Bulldogs opened with Smith Valley on Thursday, Dec. 7, and beat their fellow Bulldogs 54-23.

McDermitt (5-1) blanked Smith Valley 8-0 in the first quarter and did not look back. McDermitt built a 22-9 advantage at halftime and cruised to the victory.

After building a 34-14 lead after three quarter, McDermitt outscored Smith Valley 20-9 in the fourth quarter.

In its first game on Friday, Dec. 8, McDermitt took on Battle Mountain of the Northern 2A. The Lady Longhorns figure to be one of the top teams in the Northern 2A this year.

Battle Mountain held a slim two-point lead at 8-6 after the first quarter. However, McDermitt hung tough with the larger school and cut the deficit to a point at halftime at 17-16.

The difference in the contest was the third quarter, where Battle Mountain outscored McDermitt 18-6 to lead 35-22. The Lady Longhorns maintained its double-digit lead with a 22-point fourth quarter.

McDermitt bounced back in a big way in its second game on Friday, Dec. 8, and beat host Virginia City 57-17.

The game was all but over in the first quarter, as the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Muckers 17-1.

Virginia City also scored just one point in the fourth quarter. The Muckers did not score more than nine points in any quarter.

McDermitt continued to build its lead in the second quarter and led 35-7 at halftime. The contest was played with a running clock in the third quarter under the NIAA 35-point mercy rule. The Lady Bulldogs led 53-16 in the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs collected their third win by 30 or points in the finale on Saturday against Coleville, Calif.

McDermitt got off to a slow start and led by nine points at halftime, before pulling away in the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Wolves 21-11 out of the halftime break and closed the game out with a 17-6 run in the fourth quarter.

McDermitt traveled to Bruneau, Idaho, on Wednesday to play Rimrock. Results were not available at press time.

McDermitt is in Crane, Ore., this weekend for the Alicia Jenkins Memorial Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs played Adrian, Ore., on Friday and results were not available at press time. McDermitt closes out the tournament on Saturday.

McDermitt is off the rest of the month and returns to its home floor on Friday, Jan. 5, to play Wells in the Eastern 1A opener at 6 p.m.
