Boys basketball team grabs four wins at Whittell tourney

The Pershing County High School boys basketball team continued their winning streak at the Whittell Tournament this past weekend.

The boys headed to their second preseason tourney with five wins under their belts (5-0). The Mustangs added four more victories in Zephyr Cove to improve 9-0 overall.

Pershing County beat Hug (57-53), Pyramid Lake (48-27), North Valleys (69-44) and Tonopah (62-27).

“The North Valley game was the best we’ve played so far,” said Allen. “Defensively, the kids executed the game plan perfectly and worked their tails off. Everyone chipped in offensively.”

Derek Sandusky led the scoring against North Valley with 32 points. Lane Condie added 12 more.

For the Hug win, Condie teamed up with Sandusky and Brandon Zile. Condie punched in 15 points. Zile netted 14. Sandusky sank 13.

Condie scored 15 points against Pyramid Lake. Sandusky added 10.

Zile led the scoring against Tonopah with 20 points. Martin Cholico added 10. Chuy Acosta had 9.

JV boys win three at Longhorn Invitational

Steve Cerini coaches the JV boys. They also did well at their final preseason tournament, he said.

The JV boys beat Carlin, White Pine and Eureka at the Longhorn Invitational in Battle Mountain this past weekend. They fell to Battle Mountain.

“The boys are steadily improving,” said Cerini. “We had lots of fun.”

Assistant coach Tom Donaldson agreed.

“The boys are working hard and learning a lot,” he said. “They’ve come a long ways for a young, inexperienced group. We have a lot of work to do, but we’re heading in the right direction.”

On Tuesday, Dec. 12, Pershing County hosted its first league game of the season against Incline. Results were not available at press time.

On Saturday, the varsity and junior varsity boys travel to Churchill County for a non-conference match-up. TheJV tips off at 12:30 p.m. and the varsity follows at 2 p.m.

After playing in Fallon, the varsity and JV boys stay home for three weeks. They host North Tahoe on Friday, Dec. 22. for a league contest. The JV boys tip off at 4:30 p.m. Varsity follows at 7:30 p.m.

Lovelock hosts Dayton on Thursday, Dec. 28 and Wooster on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2018.
