Pershing wrestlers open new season

This past weekend, the Pershing County High School wrestling team traveled to Susanville, Calif., for its first tournament of the new season — the Chester Invitational.

They Mustangs competed against over 20 teams from northern Nevada and California.

Pershing County came home as runners-up in the two-day tourney.

Mike Brooks coaches the team. Buzz Brooks assists. Starting this season, they’ll have help from Jared Jensen and Bobby Gibson.

“We have a great cast of returners including many state placers,” said Mike Brooks. “We did not have any wrestler go winless at the Chester Tournament.”

Kasey Brown, Jayce Leyva and Joaquin Wanner each placed first in their weight ranges.

Wanner is a defending state champion.

Eric Wagner and Zeke Jackson placed second.

Marcus Glanton, Jeffrey Martin, Dylan Hultenschmidt and Ricky Reitz each placed fourth.

“Ricky Reitz had an outstanding tournament,” said Brooks. “Some of our freshmen wrestled very well.”

Martin, Cody Scholl, Brown, Ramon Figueroa, Wagner, Leyva, Axel Gonzalez, and Davis Murphy are returning state placers.

On Friday, Pershing County travels to Winnemucca for another two-day tournament — the Cody Louk Invitational.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, Pershing County stays home. They host the Lovelock Invitational at PCHS starting at 9 a.m.
