Lady Mustangs tip off year with four wins at Serpent Classic

It’s been an active week for the Lady Mustangs basketball team. They traveled to Hawthorne for their first preseason tournament of the year — the Serpent Classic.

Lovelock beat Smith Valley (52-25), Virginia City (63-11), Mineral County (47-38) and Lone Pine (44-32). But the Pershing County girls trailed behind Hug (44-38) and White Pine (44-29).

Pershing County heads to its final preseason tourney ranked 4-2. They travel to Zephyr Cove this weekend to compete in the Whittell tournament. They’ll play Owyhee, Mammoth and Lone Pine.

The Lady Mustangs ended their 2016-17 season ranked 24-7, overall and 11-3 in league play. They lost two seniors. Riley Jaramillo and Anna Vidales graduated last spring.

Jaramillo and Vidales led the team to a regional championship. But the squad fell to Needles, Calif. at the state competition at Del Sol High School in Las Vegas last February.

Six seasoned players step up to lead the team this year. Marissa Garcia, Sydney Jensen, Taryn Houston, Itatty Espinoza, Desiree Mosier and Faith Moreira stand poised to begin their final season of high school basketball.

Faith Happy, Kati Cerini and Maria Jimenez are juniors. Makenna Houston is a sophomore.

Pershing County starts its regular season at home on Tuesday, Dec. 12. Pershing County hosts Incline at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. in Northern 2A action.
