Lady Bucks win twice at High Sierra Invite

The Lowry High School girls basketball team had a successful trip to Reno with two wins in three games this past weekend at the High Sierra Invitational.

The Lady Bucks knocked off Galena of the Northern 4A 46-31 on Thursday, Nov. 30. Lowry’s offense had trouble getting going in the first eight minutes of play and trailed the Grizzlies 7-6 after the first quarter.

After the slow start, Lowry outscored Galena 40-24 in the final three quarters. The Lady Bucks led 19-16 at halftime and slowly pulled away in the second half. A 15-6 Lowry run in the fourth quarter sealed the victory.

Alyssa Kuskie knocked down five 3-point field goals and led the Lady Bucks with 17 points. Sydney Connors joined her in double figures with 10 points after making two 3-point shots. As a team, Lowry was 7-of-15 from the 3-point line.

Kyllie Sappington was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and netted eight points. Shelby Garrison scored four points, Sierra Maestrejuan had three and Kepa Bengochea one.

Lady Bucks fall 

to Mustangs

Lowry suffered its first loss of the season this past Friday with a 57-43 defeat to Rodriguez (Fairfield, Calif.). The Lady Bucks could not avoid a second straight slow start, as the Mustangs jumped out to a 14-8 lead after eight minutes of action.

Rodriguez increased the advantage to 32-14 at halftime after outscoring Lowry 18-6 in the second quarter. After scoring just 14 points in the first half, Lowry founds its way on offense with 18 points in the third quarter. However, the Lady Bucks were able to cut into the deficit by just a point.

Kuskie was the only Lowry player to reach double figures, netting 17 points on the strength of five 3-point field goals. Sappington scored nine points, Connors added six and Juli Garcia added two. Brooke Hansen, Victoria Tirado, Hailey Fernandez and Garrison all had two points apiece.

Lowry rallies to beat Spanish Springs 

If Lowry was a member of the Northern 4A, it would be atop the standings at 3-0, after beating Spanish Springs 58-52 on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bucks have beaten North Valleys, Galena and Spanish Springs in the larger league.

The Lady Bucks jumped out to a 13-10 lead after the first quarter but found themselves trailing 26-22 at halftime. Spanish Springs used a 16-9 run in the second quarter to go in front.

Lowry cut the deficit to a point at the start of the fourth quarter and then pulled away in the final eight minutes. The Lady Bucks outscored the Cougars 23-16 in the fourth quarter to improve to 3-1 on the year.

Lowry was lethal from the 3-point line, making 9-of-16 shots. Connors converted five baskets from long distance and finished with 18 points. Kuskie made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points. Hansen joined them in double figures with a career-high 10 points.

Garrison scored five points, Becca Kuskie and Sappington three each and Bengochea, Tirado, Maestrejuan and Fernandez had two points each. 

Lowry opened Northern 3A action on Tuesday against Dayton and results were not available at press time. The Lady Bucks are back on their home floor on Saturday to play South Tahoe at 1 p.m.
