School district facility projects

WINNEMUCCA - A number of projects that were budgeted for the 2013-14 fiscal year are being completed this summer throughout Humboldt County School District facilities. The total cost of the projects is $2.6 million. Most projects are expected to be completed by the beginning of the school year. The projects are:

• Installation of a new air conditioning system at Sonoma Heights Elementary. The project will cost the district around $1.4 million, and it is the biggest project of the summer, according to Superintendent Dr. Dave Jensen. The project will involve installation of new pipes, new units, a chiller, and updated electrical service to handle the load.

• A switch to single point of access entry ways at Grass Valley Elementary, Winnemucca Grammar School and Winnemucca Junior High. The district is currently in the process of reviewing bids for the projects, and construction is expected to start within the next few weeks. Jensen said those schools were chosen first because of the relative ease to accomplish them. No major structural work will have to be done to complete the projects.

• Installation of a concrete ramp at Lowry High School that leads to the athletic field.

• Repainting throughout district facilities.

• Replacement of doors throughout district facilities. Jensen said that there has been an issue in the past of being able to pop doors open. The new doors will be more secure.

• Installation of two gates at Lowry High School, one at the top of the athletic field and one along the art building. Jensen said the gates will be key PIN access only are are intended to restrict traffic into the back area of the school.

• Replacement of the bleachers at McDermitt. Jensen said the bleachers are currently on back order, but they are slated to be installed in October before basketball season begins.[[In-content Ad]]
