BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority has recently gained a new executive director and assistant director. Tara Love began as the new executive director on June 6 and Cassandra Ramasco began as the new assistant director on June 13.

Both women said they like their jobs and enjoy working together. Love said the two of them make a great team. Ramasco agreed.

"I actually do love working with Tara because we work really well together," said Ramasco.

Ramasco said she likes the flexibility of her schedule and working with the county. Love said she enjoys the job because it takes her out of her comfort zone.

"There are a lot of challenges in this job that I have been faced with and I enjoy a challenge," said Love.

The Lander County Convention and Tourism Authority is overseen by a board of directors and the organization handles anything that has to do with tourism in the county, explained Love. Love and Ramasco manage the Civic Center and are involved in anything that focuses on Lander County tourism. Their main goal is to keep tourists coming to the county, they said.

Their other goal is to continue serving the community through the Civic Center and working hard to make the events that come to Lander County as successful as possible.

The two women rotate working weekends running the different Civic Center events but sometimes they both work together on weekends, they said.

The recent big projects include helping to promote the Bureau of Land Management, Battle Mountain District's Shoshone Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trails, in the Shoshone Range, 25 miles south of Battle Mountain.

The two women took part in helping to host the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, held Sept. 12 - 17 on state Route 305. The tourism authority hosted a show and tell Sept. 14 for the cyclists who came to the Civic Center to talk to local school children. Love and Ramasco worked to host a luncheon that day at the Civic Center for the riders.

Love and Ramasco are also working hard to organize the 10th Annual Chukar Tournament and Feed Nov. 4 - 5 at the Civic Center. A banquet will be held Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. at the Civic Center for the hunters.

Love moved to Battle Mountain in January 2011, coming from Elko, where she lived for five years. She was born in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., and grew up in South Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side and in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. She has also briefly lived in Montana and Wyoming.

"I like that it is small," said Love of living in Battle Mountain. "I prefer small communities. I definitely like it."

Love has a 17-year-old daughter, Desirée Sherman, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Ramasco was born and raised in Battle Mountain. She has lived in Reno two different times and came back to Battle Mountain this last time in 2008. She has also lived in Phoenix, Ariz.

Ramasco is a 2001 graduate of Battle Mountain High School and she earned a diploma as a medical assistant from the Career College of Northern Nevada.

Ramasco attends biology and math classes three days a week at Great Basin College where she is working to earn her bachelor's degree in secondary math education. She said she has spent a large portion of her life helping her mother, Lura Duvall, with office duties in her personal business.

Ramasco's husband is Luke Ramasco. She has one son, Noah Nigro, 7, of Battle Mountain, and she and Luke have a baby on the way.

Their pets are Sabi, a 1½-year-old male beagle/border collie mix, and Sookie, a 12-week-old female basset hound.

Ramasco's hobbies include playing softball and coaching Little League softball. She is also helping to coach the Battle Mountain Junior High School girls seventh-grade basketball team. She also enjoys walking.

Love said she and Ramasco are thankful for all of the people who have been supportive of them in their new positions.

"Both of us are very grateful for the support we have received from the community as well as other county entities," said Love.
