ELKO, NV — Great Basin College (GBC) has been awarded nearly $1 million in federal funding to expand its distance learning capabilities and improve access to higher education for rural residents of Nevada. The grant, provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) program, will enable the college to enhance its interactive video technologies and establish new locations to better connect students across its 86,500-square-mile service area.
Great Basin College (GBC) will host the Winnemucca Center Celebration of Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home on Oct. 25, from 3-6 p.m. The event, which coincides with Nevada Day, offers the community a chance to engage with Latino literature and participate in creative writing activities. It will take place at GBC’s Winnemucca Center, Room WHST 111, with an option to attend virtually.
ELKO — Great Basin College announces the grand opening of its newly expanded welding facility, a milestone made possible with support from Nevada Gold Mines, Greater Nevada Credit Union and other generous donors. Construction on the Nevada Gold Mines Welding Technology Lab at GBC began in April of 2023 and will be completed in time to welcome students for the Fall 2024 semester.
Homeschool families and those considering homeschooling are invited to join an informative session addressing key questions about the transition from homeschool to college. The event, slated for Tuesday, July 30 at 6 p.m., will cover essential topics such as whether to graduate a child from an accredited program or a personal homeschool curriculum, and the implications of each choice for college admissions and financial aid. The meeting will take place in the main building in room 108.
Great Basin College (GBC) and Renown Health have announced a collaborative effort to introduce a pioneering Respiratory Therapy training program aimed at bolstering the rural healthcare workforce in northern Nevada. This initiative, made possible by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust and the Health Resources and Services Administration, represents a significant milestone in healthcare education for the region.

This past Spring 2024 semester students with a declared major, a 3.5 to 4.0 grade point average, and confirmed enrollment for 12 or more credits are honored by inclusion on the Dean’s List.
ELKO – Great Basin College (GBC) proudly announces the launch of an innovative Paramedic/Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Nurse (RN) Bridge program, providing a new pathway into the state’s #1 ranked Nursing Program, GBC’s Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Nursing.
Preparing students to enter the workforce with the necessary tools in order to have successful careers ensures that the workforce in rural Northern Nevada stays strong and continues to grow. Recently, Great Basin College (GBC) was awarded just under $2.2 million total in federal funding, with $760,000 that will go towards establishing reservation-based health science training and credentialing opportunities for Native American students opportunities that will allow students to attain the MAPE (Medical Assistant/Phlebotomy/EKG) and/or CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) postsecondary certificates.
BATTLE MOUNTAIN – Great Basin College, the leader in distance education for Nevada, continues its commitment to students and the communities it serves by meeting the evolving education needs of the region. After careful consideration and planning, Great Basin College has made the decision to close the Battle Mountain Center, located at 835 N 2nd St., as of July 2024.
ELKO — Are you interested in a high wage, high demand career in Diesel Technology, Industrial Maintenance Technology, Welding Technology, Electrical Systems Technology, or Instrumentation Technology? The GBC Career and Technical Education Department, CTE, is offering a Showcase of information night on these technical programs, as well as MTC Scholarship opportunities and the application process on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 5:30 pm. The event will be in person on the GBC Elko Campus: Greenhaw Technical Arts Center: Room GTA 130.
ELKO — Great Basin College has partnered with BetterMynd, an online therapy platform, to offer enrolled GBC students, 18 and older, access to free teletherapy sessions from a diverse network of licensed mental health counselors. Dr. Amber Donnelli, Associate Vice President for Faculty Success, helped spearhead the new service to meet what she says is a growing need among students for mental health support.
As many of the other essential career fields within communities struggle to fill key positions, criminal justice and law enforcement are no exceptions to the staffing difficulties that are being felt across the nation.
The GBC nursing program faculty and staff finished another year of 100% pass rates. All students have successfully taken and passed the NCLEX.
A total of 330 students at Great Basin College are being honored for their high academic achievement during the Spring 2023 semester with the release of the Dean’s List. Great Basin College acknowledges students with a 3.5 - 4.0 grade point average and confirmed enrollment in 12 or more credits for courses they took in the Spring 2023 semester.
