April 3, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Charles “Jack” Cooney, Jr., our beloved father, who passed away on April 3, 2025, at the age of 80.
He was born in Lovelock, Nevada, on January 3, 1945, a place he called home his entire life.
After graduating from Pershing County High School in 1963, he joined the Army and served in Thailand during the Vietnam War.
When his service was completed, he returned to Lovelock and worked as an equipment operator for several companies, including Cooney Enterprise Mining, Eagle Picher, and Coeur Rochester. Jack was also a loyal community member, serving as a volunteer firefighter and a member of the search and rescue.
Jack was passionate about racing and trap shooting.
He could always be found at the trap club or racetrack, whether competing or lending a helping hand.
After retirement, Jack continued to devote his time and energy to Lovelock Speedway and was proud to be an active contributor.
Jack spent his final years traveling to Reno and Idaho to spend time with his daughters and grandchildren, watching sporting events and dance recitals and celebrating holidays.
Jack was preceded in death by his father, John Cooney, and mother, Regina Viola (McDonald) Cooney.
He is survived by his siblings, Bob Cooney (Loretta), Mary Powell, Michael Cooney, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He also leaves behind his two daughters, Jodette Lemos (Daryl)and Jocelyn Houston (Denny), and three grandchildren, Raleigh, Ella, and Maverick.
A private memorial will be held at the Lovelock cemetery, and a Celebration of Life will be scheduled later this summer for all who wish to pay their respects to Jack and his family.
A date, time, and location will be announced at a later date.
