Our beloved Monica “Aunt Moni” Cervantes was unexpectedly called home, to be with our Lord, on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. She gained her beautiful angel wings at just 23 years old.
Moni was born on April 23, 2001, in Winnemucca, NV to Martin and Faustina Cervantes. She was the youngest of seven children, and being the baby of the bunch, she was the most loved and spoiled of them all. She lived in Winnemucca until 2016 when she moved to Smyrna, TN with her mother for a fresh start. However, Moni’s unbreakable connection and bond with her siblings saw her back in Nevada just a short few months later. Moni’s nomadic tendencies and gypsy soul kept her from planting roots in one spot. For the last 7 years of her life, she went back and forth between Winnemucca and Elko to spend time with each of her siblings. Sometimes she would stay with one sibling for months, other times for years. Each time she moved, she would leave a little piece of herself behind, by “forgetting” some of her favorite belongings. She would simply say, “I’ll get it later.” It was an inside joke that all Moni needed was a trash bag to move onto her next home.
Everywhere she went, Moni was loved so easily. She was the best at being a friend, sister, aunt, and daughter. Moni had a gift when it came to listening to others, and even when facing many problems of her own, she was always there for anyone who needed her, no questions asked. Her most favorite thing to do was spend time with family, which she did often through hiking, sitting in a pool and reminiscing, cooking, bonfires and making s’mores, thrift-shopping, having movie nights, and really, anything that involved being around her loved ones. Movie nights with Moni consisted of building forts in the living room, along with an eclectic selection of flicks, including romance, comedy, and horror movies. Moni was such a good cook, too, and made the best chicken gnocchi soup ever. She loved watching ASMR and pimple-popping videos and would get her nephews, nieces, and siblings hooked on them. She greatly enjoyed spontaneous car drives at random times, blasting music, and going through the McDonald’s drive-thru to get chicken nuggies and a McFlurry ice cream. Although Moni had not yet had children of her own, her biggest dream was to be a mother, and man would she have been a damn good one too. She was heavily involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews; they meant more to her than anything and, to them, she was the best Aunt Moni they could have.
Moni leaves behind so many beautiful memories that will be used to mend the broken hearts of those who loved her dearly. She is survived by her parents, Martin and Faustina Cervantes, her 6 siblings, Edgar, Martha, Mario, Martin, Angel, and Melissa, her sister-in-law, Carolina, and brother-in-law, David, and her loving nieces and nephews Alexander, Irais, Xavier, Julian, Iracely, Daisy, and Ezra, in addition to numerous grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her grandfather, Lucio Cervantes.
Thank you, God for allowing us the privilege of having Moni as part of our family, even if for a short amount of time. Please take care of her and let her know we will see her later. We love you, Moni.
