Melvin B. Howard Jr., 79, passed away on January 22nd, 2024 surrounded by his family and a few darn good friends.
Known to most of the community as “Buddy” but also a variety of other nicknames such as Bud, Budwin, Budweiser, Bro, Pops, Papa, Grandpa Buddy, and Dad.
Buddy was born on April 20th, 1944, in Hollywood, California to Marian and Melvin B. Howard Sr.
Buddy graduated from Humboldt County High School in Winnemucca, Nevada in 1963 where he met the love of his life, Delphine Bengoa.
He then attended Boise Junior College for two years and received his business associate degree.
Buddy was a member of the National Guard for many years in his twenties. Buddy and Delphine married shortly after they graduated high school at the Catholic Church in Winnemucca in 1966.
Buddy and Delphine moved to Battle Mountain where they opened a clothing store for a couple of years.
In 1968, their first child Micheal, was born and in 1972, their daughter, Carleen. Soon after Michael and Carleen were born, Buddy and Delphine moved back to Winnemucca and took over the 76 Service Station after his dad, Bode, passed away.
After running the service station for a couple of years, Buddy worked for what was known then as Glennon Equipment, an agricultural store.
After working there for many years, Buddy and Delphine then purchased Glennon Equipment in 1985 and renamed it as it was known for many years, Winnemucca New Holland.
Buddy was a pillar in the agriculture community where he met many great people and had the pleasure of working with them throughout the years at the “store”.
Buddy’s love for Delphine was greater than words could describe and their 60+ years together was an inspiration to many.
Buddy loved spending time outdoors hunting with his son, son in law, grandsons, and many great friends.
He also enjoyed spending time camping with his great friends and loved ones at Lake Davis.
Buddy had a love for rebuilding classic cars with his friends, especially his 56’ Chevy Bel Air.
He contributed greatly to the community of Winnemucca throughout his many years and was the Grand Marshall for the Winnemucca Labor Day Celebration in 2015.
Buddy and Delphine sold Winnemucca New Holland in 2015.
Even after retirement, he continued to work part-time supporting Carter Ag to take care of his life-long customers and good friends.
Working up until August of 2023, his love of working in and with the ag community never slowed down. Even while working hard his entire life, Buddy and Delphine made sure their family was always taken care of and loved.
He leaves behind a legacy where the stories and love will never run out.
Buddy is survived by his wife, Delphine; son, Micheal (Shawna) Howard; daughter, Carleen (Clinton) Quinn; granddaughter, Chalene (Chris) Tyree; grandsons, Lucas (Allie) Howard; Logan Howard; Frank Quinn; and sisters, Joan (Ron) Chesser; June (Mike) Fullmer.
Buddy is proceeded in death by both of his parents, Bode and Marian Howard as well as many other family and good friends.
The family wants to give a special shoutout on Buddy’s behalf to all of his close friends and customers over the years for being supportive and always finding something to laugh/drink with him about.
