On Football: Packers, Browns, Patriots not so real

Aaron Rodgers throwing two picks in three passes. New England making errors of commission and omission on the field and on the sideline. The Browns getting annihilated in Pittsburgh. Well, scratch the third item as something unusual. Football fans aren’t used to witnessing the great Packers quarterback, with a 10-0 lead no less, surrendering a Pick-6 and then another interception leading to a touchdown within three throws. Not only did those mistakes changed the tenor of Green Bay’s visit to Tampa Bay, it led to a Buccaneers-style pillaging for a 38-10 rout.

Boys basketball works it out

If you stop by the gym any day after school, you’ll see several basketball players working out. They’ve been at it for a couple of months. You might not recognize all of them because they’re wearing masks, but nothing slows down their moves.  “It’s pretty much a normal practice with a little less running,” says Dalton McNeff, a senior with three years of basketball under his belt. He’s hoping for a fourth, even if it only lasts six weeks. “The only time we’re allowed to take off our masks is during water breaks.” Many of their masks feature the school colors, red and black. They also depict the PCHS mascot, the Mustang. Varsity boys coach Jesse Canchola makes sure his players follow the NIAA rules, including health screens before workouts. “We don’t scrimmage, so there is no sort of body contact,” he says.

Lovelock loves the Pershing County Mustangs

Vijay Ratti changes the photos on his bulletin board with the seasons.  Football, volleyball and soccer yield to basketball and wrestling. Softball, baseball and track follow in a steady rhythm. A succession of Homecoming Kings and Queens grin at the Shell Station’s patrons. Sports is hardwired into Lovelock’s DNA. Forbes magazine just named Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Boston, Minneapolis, Detroit and Miami the nation’s sportiest cities. But the town that time forgot would top any rural list.

Nevada football releases new, smaller schedule for 2020

The 2020 Nevada football season will begin later this month as the Mountain West Conference announced the league’s schedule. The Wolf Pack will take on the same eight previously scheduled teams, but with a new order and no bye weeks.  Subject to approval from state, county and local officials, the eight-game schedule will begin on Saturday, Oct. 24.  The top two teams with the highest conference winning percentage will face off in the MW Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 19.  The 2020 Mountain West schedule is comprised of 46 conference matchups playing out over nine weeks with no divisional delineation. Nevada will have four home games at Mackay Stadium. The athletics department continues to work through local and state directives related to allowing fans in the stadium at reduced capacity.

Takin’ care of business

“So, what did you do during quarantine?” One day your children or grandchildren may ask you this question.  How will you answer? Eight Pershing County Mustang football players could reply in unison.  Jordan Gentry, Haydon Burrows, Devin Moura, Logan Oberman, Victor Flores, Conner Fecht, Tanner Woodard and Zeke Jackson finished their agility and conditioning requirements during the shutdown.

Motocross magic

If you’re looking for Travis Donaldson, Taylor or Ayden Montes, and it’s the weekend, listen for the hum of their machines. “We mostly ride around Lone Mountain,” says Travis.

Kurt Busch wins on home track

Two decades of heartbreak at his home track finally ended for Kurt Busch when a little bit of luck fell his way at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Busch happened to be the leader when a late caution Sunday night jumbled the field and put him in control of his 0-for-21 losing streak in his hometown. He had three magnificent restarts, including one in overtime, to steal a vital playoff race. The good timing helped Busch sneak his way into the third round of the NASCAR Cup playoffs. He had been ranked last among the 12 title contenders before the race; now he’s guaranteed a slot in the round of eight.

Protests to resume high school sports hit the Capitol Saturday

Those in favor of playing high school sports in the midst of a global pandemic continued to make their voices heard on Saturday afternoon in downtown Carson City. Around 125 to 150 student-athletes, kids, parents and coaches stood at the intersection in front of the Nevada State Capitol protesting for the resumption of athletics in Northern Nevada. As of Thursday, eight states across the country – including Nevada – had no fall competitions scheduled, per the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). The discussions since the initial decision to call off fall sports in Nevada in late July have only continued to become more nuanced.
