The Pershing County High School boys basketball had a Northern 2A win and two league losses this past week. The Mustangs beat Coral Academy of Science in Reno 74-16. This past Friday at home, Pershing County lost to 54-50 to Battle Mountain. The weekend closed out with a 79-49 loss to West Wendover on Saturday afternoon.
The Pershing County High School girls basketball team started their week by beating Coral Academy of Science 46-13 in Reno. Last Friday. the Mustangs played their first home game of the year this past Friday night and lost 39-29 to Battle Mountain. On Saturday, Pershing County collected a 35-25 win against the visiting West Wendover Wolverines.
Last weekend, the Pershing County High School wrestling team competed at Cody Louk, McQueen JV and Nevada Queens tournaments. "We sent kids to three different events and positives and success were everywhere," said coach Mike Brooks. At the Cody Louk in Winnemucca, the Mustangs finished eighth out of 28 teams, no small feat considering they sent only six wrestlers: Jeff Elerick (144), Angelo Gibson (157), Israel Knight (150), Wyatt Hughes (175), Jake Trowbridge (190) and Justin Carruth (132).
On Tuesday Nov. 26, Pershing County High School hosted its annual fall sports awards night in the high school auditorium. The JV and varsity football and volleyball teams attended. The PCHS girls soccer team treated its athletes to a dessert buffet earlier in the month in the middle school cafeteria.
Not surprisingly, there were plenty of football awards to go around on fall sports awards night in the revamped Pershing County High School auditorium Tuesday, Nov. 26. The football team displayed the state trophy they won by beating Incline 26-6 in the NIAA 2A state championship game at McQueen High School in Reno. Their video expert Landon Smith, a senior, placed hand beaded lanyards around each coach's neck.
The rain cleared out early Saturday morning but the wind was still blowing hard for a 10 a.m. kickoff at McQueen High School in Reno. The McQueen field is situated on a hill on campus in one of the most wind-prone areas in Reno. That meant trouble for Incline, who loves to throw the ball. Tommy Williams, one of the best quarterbacks in Nevada had trouble throwing the ball all day. With all those factors in play, the Pershing County High School football team won its first state championship since 2018 on Saturday. The Mustangs beat the Highlanders 26-6.
There’s only one thing better than hosting playoff games and that’s winning them. After beating West Wendover 59-6 and Lincoln County (51-7), the Pershing County High School football team is ready for this Saturday's Nevada Class 2A title game against the Incline Highlanders at McQueen High School in Reno. Kickoff is at 10 a.m.
The Pershing County High School junior varsity football team ended the year at 4-4, overall, and 1-0 in the league.
The PCHS Spirit Squad was part of the Mustangs’ recent win against West Wendover. They will cheer for the Mustangs throughout the postseason however the wind blows, victory or defeat. Christina Dickerman spoke about her first year as cheer coach. Her coaching background includes middle school track and high school color guard.
The undefeated Pershing County High School football team hosted West Wendover in the opening round of the NIAA 2A State Championships at Joe Yanni Field this past Friday night. The Mustangs beat the Wolverines with a final score of 59-6, after the first quarter ended with the Pershing County ahead 40-0. "It’s great to get home playoff games. We were very happy with our team's performance," coach Mike Brooks said.
Last Saturday, the Pershing County High School volleyball team traveled to Incline Village for the Northern 2A Regional Championship with a bid to the state tournament at berth. The undefeated (18-0) Mustangs entered as the No. 1 seed. On Friday, Incline beat Battle Mountain in three sets so the Highlanders and Mustangs faced each other on Saturday.
Last Friday, 14 Lovelock seniors played the last regular season football game of their high school years. On senior night, the Pershing County High School football team defended its undefeated status, won the league championship and claimed the No.1 seed going into the playoffs.
The Pershing County High School girls soccer week started with a 4-0 loss to Fernley on the road. The Mustangs had better luck on senior night when they beat Battle Mountain 6-0 in Lovelock. They now stand at 7-9-2 overall and 5-9-2 in the league.
Last Friday, on a cold October night in Lovelock, the Pershing County High School football team beat visiting West Wendover 52-6. The future Mustangs added to the festive mood, as youth players and fans met at the south end zone for the Mustang spell out.
Last week, the Pershing County High School volleyball team won both road matches on its only overnight road trip of the year. First, the Mustangs beat their rival school, Battle Mountain 25-15, 25-14, 25-23. Next, Pershing County vanquished the West Wendover Wolverines 25-13, 25-20, 25-16. The Mustangs stand at the top of the Northern 2A at 17-0 and have clinched the first-place position going into the Northern 2A Regional Championships at Incline High School on Nov. 1-2.
