The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team had the tough task of playing its first four Northern 2A matches on the road. Battle Mountain was in West Wendover on Friday night and lost to the Wolverines in four sets. West Wendover claimed a close first set 25-23, only to see Battle Mountain bounce back to win the second set 25-20. The Lady Longhorns could not keep the momentum going, as West Wendover won the final two sets 25-19 and 25-14. Battle Mountain made its way to Ely on Saturday and dropped a four-set match to White Pine.
The Battle Mountain High School football team was back on the road Saturday night to take on Coral Academy at Wooster High School in Reno. The Longhorns made quick work of the Falcons, scoring 34 points in the first quarter en route to a 62-8 win. Coral Academy is playing its first official year in the Northern 2A. "The kids came out fast again this week,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “That was good to see after a long bus ride. You never really know what to expect on the first road game of the season." Battle Mountain (2-0) forced a 3-and-out by the Coral Academy offense and when the Longhorns took over on offense Cody Ostler scored on the first play for a 6-0 lead.
The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team was back at home this past weekend to play a pair of Lyon County schools. The Lady Longhorns were shut out in both matches, losing 1-0 to Fernley on Friday.
It was a mixed bag of results for the Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team this past weekend. The Lady Longhorns opened Northern 3A ‘B’ division play against Dayton on Friday afternoon and rallied for a 2-2 tie. The Dust Devils scored both of their goals in the first 40 minutes of play to lead 2-0 at halftime.
Dayton High School will be without a football team this season. A low turnout for the program forced the Dust Devils to drop all levels of football, marking the first year the school will be without a team since it opened its doors. After deciding to become an independent member of 3A last year, Dayton Athletic Director David Palmer stated the decision came as the school tried to reconstruct the program.
With a romp over Nevada, No. 16 Oregon got back on track. Justin Herbert threw for 310 yards and five touchdowns before heading to the sideline in the third quarter, and the Ducks rebounded from their season-opening loss to Auburn with a 77-6 rout Saturday night. The Ducks (1-1) have won 15 straight home openers and 24 straight over nonconference foes at Autzen Stadium. Oregon tied a school record with seven touchdown passes -- caught by seven receivers. The Ducks also tied their record for points at Autzen. "Huge step in the right direction," Herbert said afterward. "Tough loss last week but we came back and had a great week of practice and we were fired up to be here, and glad to get back at it tomorrow." T
While almost all of Nevada high schools are well into their seasons, some playing three games, the Battle Mountain High School football team finally opened its season this past Friday night at home. Despite it being the season-opener, Battle Mountain did not look rusty, scoring on the third play of the game en route to a 42-6 win over Silver Stage. "It was nice to finally get that first game played and now we can move on to cleaning things up and gearing down for the rest of the season,” said BMHS head coach Mitch Domagala
The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team got off to a quick start in league play with a pair of victories at home this past weekend. Battle Mountain overcame a 2-1 deficit on Friday to beat Dayton 3-2. Battle Mountain began the scoring in the ninth minute, as the Dayton goalie misjudged the win and watched the ball roll past him on the quick field for a Longhorn goal.
Battle Mountain’s Destiny Villanueva paced the field, as the Lady Longhorns hosted schools from around northern Nevada in a league tournament Wednesday at Mountain View Golf Course. Villanueva won low-medalist honors with a round of 99 and was the only golfer to break 100 on the day. Battle Mountain finished second in the team standings with a 475. Adrianna Robles carded a 114 for the Lady Longhorns and Charley Gusky (128) and Emilee Henning (134) rounded out the scores for Battle Mountain.
When Nevada quarterback Carson Strong and kicker Brandon Talton attended high school in Vacaville, California, neither paid close attention to the other. They were a year apart and attended rival schools. But last year, when they met up in Vacaville at a football game, Strong pitched Nevada to Talton.

The Battle Mountain High School girls soccer team opened its season last week with three matches at the White Pine tournament in Ely. The Lady Longhorns recorded a 1-0 win on Friday over West Wendover. Zarina Ceja scored the only goal of the match. Mandy Lofthouse recorded two saves for Battle Mountain. Injuries played a role in Battle Mountain’s 3-1 loss to Pershing County on Saturday morning. The Lady Longhorns were down to 11 players for the match.
The Battle Mountain High School volleyball team hosted its annual tournament this past weekend that featured 1A and 2A varsity schools and the Spring Creek JV. Junior varsity and freshmen teams played at the junior high. The Lady Longhorns' varsity squad finished second in pool play but was knocked out in the first round of bracket play on Saturday afternoon. Battle Mountain begins Northern 2A action with four straight road matches at Incline, North Tahoe, West Wendover and White Pine. The Lady Longhorns are back home to play Coral Academy (Sept. 20) and Yerington (Sept. 21).
The Winnemucca Regional Raceway (WRR) was smoking last Friday night with 16 drivers tearing up the dirt track for the second-to-last run of the season.
Even though the season started last weekend from some football teams throughout Nevada, the Battle Mountain High School JV and varsity football teams are still prepping for its season openers on Aug. 30 and Sept. 6. The Longhorns hosted a scrimmage on Saturday afternoon against Spring Creek, Elko, Pershing County and the Lowry freshmen. The scrimmage gave the teams a chance to shake off the cobwebs and hit someone else. The Battle Mountain JV travels to West Wendover on Friday to play White Pine. Meanwhile, the varsity squad waits another week to open with Silver Stage at home on Friday, Sept. 6.
