The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team picked up three wins in a busy week, as the home stretch in the season is upon us. Battle Mountain was on its home floor on Tuesday, Jan. 28, and came away with a 68-55 win over Wells in the non-conference meeting. The Leopards jumped out to a 19-11 lead in the first quarter, closing out the period on a 12-2 run.
Adam Thistlewood had a career-high 24 points and Isaiah Stevens hit an 18-footer at the buzzer to lift Colorado State to a 92-91 victory over Nevada on Wednesday night.
Terrance Spann was officially named Dayton High School’s new football coach Monday by Dayton High athletic director David Palmer. Spann was brought into the program in 2017 as the varsity linebacker coach before taking over as the man in charge. It’s a unique situation for Spann after Dayton didn’t field a football program in the fall of 2019 due to low turnout, leaving the new man in charge with one simple goal for his new program.
Jay Norvell has announced the hiring of Thomas Sheffield as the special teams coordinator for the Nevada football team. Sheffield comes to Nevada from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where had a successful three-year run as the Golden Lions’ special teams, coordinator and tight ends coach. He also served as the recruiting coordinator for the Golden Lions. Sheffield previously worked with Nevada’s former special teams coach Tommy Perry at North Texas.
Bill Best, who coached at Rice for the past two seasons and who had a successful run as the line coach and run-game coordinator at Stephen F. Austin, has been hired by Jay Norvell as Nevada’s offensive line coach.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team headed out last weekend for its longest road trip of the season and came back home with a split of two league games for Lake Tahoe. Battle Mountain started the trip in Incline on Friday night and suffered a 48-18 loss to the league-leading Highlanders. Incline jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first quarter and held Battle Mountain to single digits in every quarter.
Coming off a thrilling victory over Yerington the week before, the Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team was on the road in Lake Tahoe last weekend to play Incline and North Tahoe.
In the last tournament of the regular season, the Battle Mountain High School wrestling team traveled to Fernley to participate in the 20th annual Walter Marrietta Vaquero Classic. “This is a great tournament,” said BMHS coach Mitch Domagala. “It gives us one final chance to go against the best 4A and 3A teams in Northern Nevada before we begin the stretch run for the state tournament.”
Battle Mountain’s Nevaeah Serna was in Carson City this past weekend for the 2020 Blizzard Blast. Serna took home the top spot in the girls 8 and under 25-yard butterfly with a time of 19.86 seconds to beat Carson’s Aliyah Heyder by .09 seconds. Serna place third in the girls 8 and under 50-yard butterfly at 55.40, cutting 1.74 seconds off her time. Heyder won that race at 47.75 and Sparks Dominique Dickerson was second at 54.82.
San Diego State home basketball games are starting to feel like they did back in the Kawhi Leonard era, when a packed Viejas Arena rocked and the Aztecs reached the Sweet 16 for the first time. This time, it’s a trio of transfers leading the No. 7 Aztecs back into national prominence. New Zealander Yanni Wetzell stepped up with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds Saturday night for SDSU, which got hot in the second half and beat Nevada 68-55 to remain the nation’s only undefeated team.
The University of Nevada football team will travel to play Minnesota in 2024 as part of its non-conference schedule, the schools announced today.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team saw a double-digit lead get away on Saturday afternoon, as Yerington rallied to beat the Lady Longhorns 47-44. The win by the Lions moved them into a three-way tie for first place in the Northern 2A with Incline and White Pine. The Lady Longhorns are fourth in the league at 5-3 and Pershing County is fifth at 4-4.
The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity girls basketball team picked up two wins this past weekend at home. Battle Mountain beat Coral Academy 48-16 on Friday and Yerington 39-12 on Saturday. The Lady Longhorns travel to Incline on Friday and North Tahoe on Saturday.

The Battle Mountain High School boys basketball team had to wait until the final second on Saturday, to complete a weekend sweep at home in the Northern 2A and finish the first half of the season at 5-3. The Longhorns held a two-point lead against Yerington on Saturday afternoon and escaped with a 51-49 victory, after the Lions’ last-second shot came up short from 30 feet.
